At our next BookClub meeting on Sunday April 13, I will propose this idea - to use TheBookClubBlog to share the books, magazine & journal articles, and whatever else we're reading or seeing (films, plays, performances, concerts, ...). It might serve a variety of valuable services: 1. an ongoing 'nomination list' 2. a continuing discussion of some of our books already read, but not exhaustively discussed or about which we have some continuing ideas 3. an ongoing sharing of each of our members' wide interests beyond the tip of the iceberg we get to share at our book discussions.

Please add your thinking on this proposal.

Back by popular demand, Joanne Drew and Anne Earney will co-teach an eight-week Advanced Fiction Workshop which will begin Saturday, January 21. Former students have given both of these instructors excellent evaluations on their instruction, so this will be an opportunity to get sound professional direction and guidance on your works in progress!!

Classes meet on Saturday mornings, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 Noon. The first class session will meet in Room 75 J.C. Penney Conference Center.

Registration is limited to 16 students, so please register early!!

Advanced Fiction Workshop

January 21 - March 11

Have you written a story or begun a novel, but don't know what to do next to improve your work? This advanced fiction workshop will bring you valuable feedback on your work, including suggestions for revision and ideas about what to do next. Whether you plan to submit to publishing markets or are writing for personal satisfaction, this class will move your writing to the next level.

This course will follow a workshop format : students will submit a completed draft of a piece of fiction (a short story or novel chapter), to be read by other students and instructors and discussed in class. This is an opportunity to receive personalized, detailed feedback, including suggestions for revising and submitting. This will not be a lecture-based course on fiction technique, but a workshop that incorporates discussion of techniques appropriate for specific stories, to help writers refine their fiction and advance their skills. Published fiction may be assigned as readings to illustrate writing techniques that may be of use to writers, but the focus will be on students' work. All information will be tailored to fit the writer's specific needs.

Techniques for improvement will be offered, along with practical information such as:

formatting and submitting stories for publication
writing cover letters
finding appropriate markets and contests
resources for further learning

This is a great opportunity to have knowledgeable readers and writers closely examine your fiction and offer feedback, and to gain information about fiction markets tailored to the type of story you write.

Fee: $159 for this 8-week workshop.

Joanne Drew received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Puget Sound and is currently a candidate for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from UM-St. Louis. She has 15 years experience in professional writing and editing including positions as Features Editor at Washington Journal, a regional legal newspaper; Managing Editor at River Styx Literary Magazine, a St. Louis-based journal of poetry and fiction, and as Editorial Consultant for Quantum Loyalty Marketing. She currently teaches creative writing at UM St. Louis Continuing Education, Springboard to Learning, and Writers In The Schools (W.I.T.S). Her story Dirty River was published in Cross Currents Literary Review and she is currently working on her first novel.

Anne Earney has a BS in Psychology from Truman State University ('96) and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing with an emphasis in fiction ('05). This is her third year teaching in the Continuing Education program at UMSL. Anne's fiction awards include first place in the 2005 Night Train Firebox Fiction Competition, the 2004 Flyway Iowa Sweet Corn Contest, the 2003 Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, and a partial scholarship to the Summer Literary Seminars in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2004. Her fiction has been published or is forthcoming inNight Train, Kaleidowhirl, Interstice, Big Ugly Review, Flyway and Pangolin Papers, and in two anthologies, Triskaideka, a Cave Hollow Press anthology of Missouri writers and For Here or To Go: Stories About the Service Industry. One of her stories has been translated and published in a Turkish journal, Dushe-yazmi, and another was commissioned for inclusion in an art show in Boston. She recently served as guest editor for the online flash fiction magazineflashquake. She writes features articles on the arts and a column on mixed drinks for Sauce Magazine.

Discussion 1:30 pm, Dark Star Safari, by Paul Theroux. Commerce Bank meeting room, Delmar and Leland (one block east, and across street from Cicero’s. Meeting room is accessed ONLY through always-locked glass door on Delmar sidewalk, just east of ATM. Bank parking tends to fill up with the usual Loop walkers and gawkers. You will probably want to park in the middle of the city lot, and walk a half block to both Cicero’s and Commerce Bank.

If there is any possibility you will arrive after 2:00 pm you will need to call Wilbur and Kay. We will be down some stairs and through 3 doors, so are not likely to hear unexpected latecomers.
